Upon information from local sources in Palmyra, DGAM can say that terrorist members of ISIS (ISIL) have planted explosives inside the temples and monuments of the Ancient City, while the targets of that operation could not be determined.
Same sources also noted that the lion-shaped Al-Lat statue, repositioned from the Temple of Al-Lat to the entrance hallway of the Museum of Palmyra, was destroyed by ISIS members last Saturday, June 20th 2015, despite the protective actions made by members of DGAM Department of Palmyra to cover the statue (3.5m x 0.5m height x depth and 15 tons) with a steel box and sandbags prior the invasion of ISIS, in order to protect it from potential clashes and bombings.
On the other hand, we could not verify these information through a local DGAM staff member, hoping they are not real.
Based on ISIS destruction and looting in other historical cities in Northern Iraq, we consider this situation an omen and sign of fatality, but we count on the local community and figures to play an effective role to neutralize the ancient city and the museum, hoping they can face such fanatic groups, who only believe in killing, robbery and destruction.
