Some media reported yesterday that terrorist militias blew up a loaded tunnel with explosives to the West of the Citadel of Aleppo, located in the centre of the Ancient City of Aleppo, leading to heavy physical damages there.

DGAM regional department in Aleppo reported today that the explosion took place in the open area between the main gate of the citadel and the entrance of Khan Shouneh facing the citadel, leading to partial damages in both the gate and the entrance.

The construction of the 10th-century Citadel of Aleppo started during the rule of Sayf al-Dawla, and is considered one of the architectural masterpieces of Islamic fortresses.  Moreover, the citadel has been registered on the List of World Heritage since 1986.  The location is a natural hill that has been used as a fortification for centuries.  On the other hand, appearances of a Hittite temple dating to the 1st millennium B.C. were also found there.
