Windows into the Spirit of a Civilization that Inspired the World

Museums are not merely places for preserving artifacts; they are knowledge and cultural institutions that contribute to building collective awareness and understanding one’s civilizational identity. In Syria, national museums serve as a true mirror of a history spanning thousands of years, showcasing unique archaeological treasures extracted from across the country and preserving the tangible memory of civilizations that flourished alongside humanity.

From the National Museum of Damascus, which houses the world’s oldest written alphabet, to the Idlib Museum with the masterpieces of Ebla, and through the museums of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor, As-Suwayda, Palmyra, and beyond… each museum offers a window into a different historical era, reflecting the identity of its region.

The Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums manages these institutions, develops their exhibitions, and provides educational programs and periodic displays for diverse visitor groups. It also strengthens partnerships with international museums to exchange expertise and organize global exhibitions that showcase Syria’s rich heritage. In our vision, a museum is not a storage of history—it is a living bridge between the past and the present.
