In the framework of the development of cultural cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Russian Federation, a memorandum of understanding was signed in Moscow between the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums and the Foundation for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage "Palmyra". It aims at providing the necessary support in the field of restoration and rehabilitation of Syrian archaeological sites and cultural property in the framework permitted by the laws and regulations of the two countries by providing the financial, technical and scientific assistance required for the rehabilitation of these properties, especially the city of Palmyra. The Palmyra Foundation will provide the necessary funding for the restoration work and to provide the required technical personnel, and equipment in cooperation with a number of specialized Russian scientific institutions, including the Museum of the East in Moscow and the Hermitage Museum in St. Peter's Burg. The Memorandum of Understanding also provides for the opening of a Russian center in Damascus to develop scientific and cultural cooperation in archaeological and historical research. The Palmyra Foundation is a social institution established to contribute to the restoration of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria and has a financial fund that receives donations from governmental, private and individual bodies. The memo was signed during a visit by the delegation of the Ministry of Culture, Dr. Mahmoud Hamoud, Dr. Ahmed Dib, and Mr. Mahmoud Abdel Wahed to Moscow earlier this month. The delegation visited museums, archaeological research centers and historical landmarks in Moscow, including the Moscow Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the Kremlin.
